With Parliament continuing to remain stalled for the third straight week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met more than 30 newly inducted Rajya Sabha MPs from the ruling NDA over breakfast. The meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, focused on parliamentary responsibilities, personal conduct and the importance of effectively engaging with both the House and the Opposition.

Among the new members was BJP president Nitin Nabin, who entered the Rajya Sabha for the first time in the current session following the June elections. According to sources, PM Modi advised the MPs to be cautious about the use of their official letterheads and asked them to avoid speaking rudely to people over the phone. He also encouraged them to learn from all parliamentarians, including those from Opposition parties. The Prime Minister further urged the MPs to devote maximum time to parliamentary proceedings and work towards achieving 100% attendance.

The interaction also included questions about Modi’s personal routine. In response, the Prime Minister said he falls asleep within eight seconds of getting into bed and sleeps for only three hours. He emphasised the importance of remaining focused on the present to achieve the best possible results. "Right now I am with you, so I am not thinking about anything else. I think about and live in the moment I am in," the PM said in response to a question from Ashok Mittal, who recently left AAP to join the BJP, sources said. On dealing with jet lag, Modi said that he sets his watch to the time of the country he is travelling to immediately after boarding the aircraft. "This way I don't face any problem," he said.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of significant political shifts in the Rajya Sabha, with members of parties such as AAP, TMC and BJD moving towards the NDA between the previous and ongoing sessions. Seven AAP MPs, led by Raghav Chadha, left the party to join the BJP, while three MPs nominated by the TMC—Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy and Prakash Chik Baraik—resigned from their seats before joining the BJP and subsequently entering the House as BJP members. Amid continued parliamentary disruption, Modi’s interaction sought to underline discipline, active participation and responsible conduct among the NDA’s new Rajya Sabha members.
