RBI Holds Rates Steady at 5.25% as Global Risks Rise

New Delhi, August 05, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India has maintained its policy repo rate at 5.25 per cent, keeping its monetary policy stance neutral amid continuing global trade uncertainty and geopolitical tensions. The decision reflects the central bank’s cautious approach as international developments continue to pose risks to inflation and economic growth.

The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate remains at 5 per cent, while the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and bank rate continue at 5.5 per cent. Announcing the decision, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said global trade uncertainties persist due to fresh tariff measures by the United States. He also highlighted volatility in crude oil prices and financial markets due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

The MPC’s decision was broadly in line with market expectations, with economists anticipating no change in either interest rates or the neutral policy stance. The RBI said inflation has moderated from previous highs but has shown some upward movement in recent months. It remains influenced by crude oil prices, exchange-rate movements and geopolitical developments, although it continues to remain within the RBI’s prescribed tolerance band.

The central bank said domestic economic activity remains resilient, backed by healthy growth momentum, favourable monsoon conditions and sustained foreign capital inflows. Governor Malhotra said the Indian economy continues to demonstrate resilience but cautioned that signs of stress are emerging in certain segments. He added that considerable risks remain around both inflation and growth prospects, warranting a cautious policy approach.
