Nearly six years after Disha Salian’s death, the case has taken a fresh turn with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registering an FIR following a direction from the Bombay High Court. The former manager of actor Sushant Singh Rajput died in Mumbai in June 2020, and the latest development brings renewed scrutiny to the circumstances of her death and allegations concerning what allegedly happened afterwards.

The FIR names several people for investigation, including Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, Rohan Roy, actors Dino Morea and Sooraj Pancholi, Aaditya Thackeray’s bodyguards, Rhea Chakraborty, Showik Chakraborty, former police officer Sachin Vaze, former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh, DCP Vishal Thakur and former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, police personnel, forensic officials, doctors and other individuals have also been mentioned.

According to the FIR, the probe will examine allegations of criminal conspiracy, suppression or destruction of evidence, fabrication of official records and the alleged creation and propagation of a “false suicide story”. It states that “the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, father of Aaditya Thackeray, and others also played a significant role in the conspiracy and subsequent cover-up.” The investigation will also examine the role of police personnel, forensic officials, doctors, security guards and members of the special investigation team.

Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling from a residential building in Mumbai’s Malad area, following which Mumbai Police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Six days later, Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence, leading to widespread speculation about a possible connection between the two deaths, although they were investigated separately. The Bombay High Court recently questioned the handling of Salian’s case, observing that the investigation “raises more questions than answers” and pointing to “glaring discrepancies”.

Salian’s father, Satish Salian, had previously made allegations against Aaditya Thackeray and Dino Morea. Speaking to ANI, he said, “I stated the facts exactly as they were; I told them everything that happened to my daughter,” and said he had named Aaditya Thackeray, Sooraj Pancholi, Dino Morea and the bodyguards. He added, “The truth cannot be defeated. God stands where the truth is; that is why justice will be served.” Mumbai Police had earlier maintained that Salian died by suicide, while the CBI’s fresh investigation will now determine whether the allegations recorded in the FIR are supported by evidence. The allegations are not findings of guilt.
