Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah used the global platform of the UN General Assembly to underline the importance of international solidarity during times of crisis, thanking countries and organisations that extended support to Nepal in the aftermath of the deluge. India and China received a specific mention in his address for their immediate assistance to the Himalayan nation.

Rather than framing Nepal’s experience around grievances, Shah opened this part of his address by saying he wanted to offer suggestions and acknowledge those who responded when the country needed help. His remarks reflected Nepal’s appreciation not only for its two immediate neighbours but also for the wider international humanitarian response.

Shah said, "Excellencies, I am not here to complain but to share some suggestions. First, I wish to express Nepal's deep gratitude to all those who came to our aid in the aftermath of the deluge. Our immediate neighbours, India and China offered prompt and generous assistance. Other friendly countries, the United Nations system, humanitarian agencies, philanthropies and people around the world stood with Nepal. To all of them, I say thank you on the behalf of grateful people of Nepal."

The Prime Minister’s message brought Nepal’s ties with its neighbours into focus while also recognising assistance that came from beyond the region. By acknowledging governments, the United Nations system, humanitarian organisations, philanthropies and individuals together, Shah presented the response to the disaster as an example of international cooperation during an emergency.

His remarks at the General Assembly ultimately centred on gratitude and collective support, with Nepal acknowledging the countries and institutions that stood by it after the deluge. The specific recognition of India and China also underscored the role neighbouring countries can play in providing rapid assistance when disasters strike.
