India experienced a day of sharply contrasting results at the shooting range on Friday, celebrating a commanding gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event while narrowly falling short of another title in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team competition. Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet delivered the standout result with gold, while Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil and Niraj Kumar secured silver after losing crucial ground during the standing stage.

Suruchi and Kamaljeet, brought together as a pair at the last minute, made the most of their second opportunity after disappointment in their respective individual events. The Indian combination had already signalled its form by topping qualification with 587 before producing a total of 484.6 in the medal contest. They finished 6.6 points clear of South Korea’s Choo Gaeun and Hong Suhyeon to claim the title. The victory gave India its second gold medal of the Nagoya Games following the women’s cricket team’s triumph.

The result also marked a strong comeback for both shooters. Suruchi had earlier failed to reach the women’s 10m air pistol final, while Kamaljeet narrowly missed qualification in the men’s event, finishing ninth and just one point outside the final. Their mixed-team success therefore turned earlier individual setbacks into one of India’s major shooting results at the Games.

India came close to adding another shooting gold in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team event. Tomar, Patil and Niraj were well placed following the kneeling and prone stages, but the standing series changed the course of the contest. Their scores dipped in the final and most demanding position, where shooters compete without the support available in prone shooting. China eventually claimed gold with 1,766 points, finishing four points ahead of India.

Tomar entered the closing phase in the lead but scores of 97 and 95 in his final two series pushed him down to third, while Patil’s 97 and 96 saw him slip to ninth. Although the late drop left India with silver instead of gold, the day still brought another significant medal haul from the range. Tomar and Niraj will now have another opportunity in the individual final later on Friday.
