President Murmu Hails India’s Glasgow Glory
New Delhi, August 03, 2026
India signed off from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a strong 39-medal haul — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the Indian contingent, with special praise for women athletes, who accounted for 8 of India’s 13 gold medals. The result came despite India competing in a reduced programme that excluded several traditionally successful sports, including wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.
“I am delighted that India’s sportspersons have put up excellent performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. I am especially happy to note that women have brought us 8 out of the 13 gold medals won by India. My hearty congratulations to all the 39 medal winners and every member of the contingent who contributed during the Games. I am sure that India’s sportspersons will bring greater glory to the country in the future international events,” President Murmu said in a post on X.
Boxing and athletics led India’s medal charge with 10 medals each, while weightlifting contributed eight. Boxing produced a record seven gold medals, the highest by any nation in the sport at a single Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu opened India’s gold-medal account in weightlifting, while Gulveer Singh created history by winning two individual track-and-field medals. Neeraj Chopra added silver in the men’s javelin throw.
India’s para athletes also delivered a historic performance, winning seven medals — three gold, two silver and two bronze — including six from para athletics. Judo produced another landmark moment as Asmita Dey became India’s first Commonwealth Games champion in the sport. With the Glasgow campaign, India’s overall Commonwealth Games tally climbed to 603 medals from 19 appearances, keeping the country among the Games’ most successful sporting nations.
