A powerful earthquake struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu, prompting emergency response measures and tsunami warnings across several prefectures. The 7.1-magnitude tremor has once again highlighted the country's constant battle with seismic activity, as authorities moved swiftly to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake's epicentre was located 10 kilometres below the sea surface off Kumamoto Prefecture. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has said injuries have been reported due the quake and a buildings has collapsed in the region. Authorities issued a tsunami warning, forecasting waves of up to one metre, while residents living in coastal areas were urged to move to higher ground and follow official evacuation instructions. Broadcaster NHK reported that waves of the expected height may already have been recorded.

The Prime Minister's Office instructed authorities to rapidly evaluate the extent of the damage, prioritise the protection of human life, and leave no effort spared in disaster response operations. Emergency earthquake warnings were also issued for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki prefectures on Kyushu. The latest quake comes just weeks after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan without causing any deaths or major damage.

Japan remains one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where four major tectonic plates meet. The nation experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year and continues to strengthen its disaster preparedness, shaped by past tragedies such as the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The latest seismic event serves as another reminder of the importance of vigilance and swift emergency response in one of the world's most active seismic zones.
