Vice President Advocates Citizen-First Governance Over VIP Culture
New Delhi, June 24, 2026
The discussion around governance and public service took centre stage as Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan released a book examining VIP culture in India. The event highlighted the idea that democratic institutions become stronger when public leadership remains accessible and focused on citizens rather than privilege.
While releasing the book VIP Culture in India: Power, Privilege and the Distance from Democracy at Uprashtrapati Bhavan, the Vice-President said the subject raises important questions about democratic values and public accountability. He noted that the Constitution’s vision is rooted in justice, equality, liberty and fraternity, and stressed that public office should be viewed as a responsibility instead of a symbol of status.
Referring to classical teachings and contemporary governance examples, he said leadership must reflect accessibility, empathy and accountability. Mentioning initiatives associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including efforts to reduce visible symbols of privilege and minimise inconvenience to citizens, he recalled the statement, “Every Indian is special. Every Indian is a VIP,” and added that “Seva is the ultimate Dharma.”
The event also recognised examples of simplicity and service in public life while encouraging renewed attention towards equality, dignity and democratic values. Concluding the discussion, the Vice-President called for governance that remains connected to citizens and guided by responsibility, humility and public trust.
