Gujarat Pushes Import Substitution in Fertilisers, Expands Tribal Tourism Focus at VGRC
India has taken a major step toward modernizing its highway infrastructure with the launch of its first barrier-less tolling system on the Surat–Bharuch stretch of NH-48 in Gujarat.
India Introduces Barrier-Free Tolling on NH-48
The initiative reflects a broader push toward seamless, technology-driven mobility, aimed at reducing congestion and improving travel efficiency across national highways.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari rolled out the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system at the Choryasi toll plaza, allowing vehicles to pass through without stopping. The system uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) along with FASTag to automatically deduct toll charges, eliminating the need for physical toll booths and long queues.
This new approach is expected to significantly cut travel time, lower fuel consumption, and reduce emissions caused by idling vehicles. By minimizing manual intervention, it also enhances transparency and creates a smoother driving experience for commuters.
As a pilot project, this rollout marks the beginning of a potential nationwide transformation in toll collection. If expanded successfully, barrier-free tolling could redefine highway travel in India, making journeys faster, cleaner, and more efficient.
