US Launches ‘Project Homecoming’: Free Flights and $2,600 Exit Bonus Offered to Illegal Immigrants
New Delhi | 18 March 2026
The US Department of Homeland Security has introduced a new initiative aimed at encouraging voluntary departure of illegal immigrants by offering free flights and financial assistance. Under the programme titled “Project Homecoming,” migrants are being offered a return journey to their home countries along with an exit bonus of $2,600. The campaign has been promoted using visuals of global landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, to reach a diverse migrant population.
The initiative was launched following the inauguration of Donald Trump’s second term in office and is designed to provide a structured and voluntary alternative to deportation. Authorities have urged migrants to use the Customs and Border Protection mobile application to begin the process, where they can register their intent, submit required details, and access information about travel arrangements and financial incentives.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, more than 2.2 million undocumented immigrants have already opted for the programme since January 2025. Officials say the scheme allows individuals to leave the country as regular travellers, without facing arrest, detention, or physical restraints, making the process smoother and less stressful.
Initially introduced with a smaller incentive of $1,000, the programme has now been expanded with a higher financial offer to encourage wider participation. The government states that the initiative aims to streamline immigration management while ensuring a more humane and voluntary exit option for those residing in the country without legal status.
