No Fuel Shortage in India, Government Urges Public Not to Panic Buy Petrol or Diesel

New Delhi | 14 March 2026

Amid rising concerns about fuel availability due to tensions between the United States and Iran, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued an advisory asking citizens not to panic-buy petrol or diesel. The ministry clarified that fuel supplies across the country remain stable and sufficient. In its statement, it assured the public that “Petrol and diesel are adequately available at retail outlets across the country,” and urged people to avoid unnecessary panic purchasing.

The ministry also warned consumers against storing petrol or diesel in loose or inappropriate containers, stating that such practices could lead to serious safety risks. Officials stressed that fuel is available at all petrol pumps and that any violation of safety norms at retail outlets will lead to strict action from authorities.

The advisory followed the discovery of a safety violation at a petrol pump in Tamil Nadu. According to the ministry, fuel was being filled in a loose container at the outlet, which is unsafe. “It has come to notice that at one retail outlet in Tamil Nadu, petrol was being taken in a loose container, which is unsafe and not advisable,” the statement said. The petrol pump involved has been suspended and penalised, while all fuel dealers have been directed to strictly follow safety guidelines.

Earlier, Hardeep Singh Puri also addressed concerns about possible fuel shortages while speaking in the Lok Sabha. The Union Petroleum Minister assured that “There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene, ATF or fuel oil,” adding that “the availability of petrol, diesel, aviation and fuel oil is fully assured.” He also stated that India has secured sufficient crude oil supplies despite disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and reassured citizens that “India's crude oil and domestic LPG supply are fully protected.”
