PM Narendra Modi Launches ₹18,700 Crore Infrastructure Projects in Kolkata to Boost Connectivity and Growth

Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone and inaugurated several development projects worth around ₹18,700 crore in Kolkata. The projects are aimed at improving road, railway and port infrastructure across West Bengal and strengthening connectivity in eastern India. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the initiatives would support trade, industry and economic development while improving the daily lives of lakhs of people.


Among the key projects are the construction of the Kharagpur–Moregram Expressway, the Dubrajpur Bypass and new bridges over the Kangsabati River and Shilabati River. These developments are expected to make travel smoother and improve connectivity between various parts of the state, making transportation faster for both people and goods.


Highlighting the importance of railway development, the Prime Minister said a nationwide effort is underway to modernise the Indian Railways and ensure that West Bengal benefits from the transformation. He dedicated the Automatic Block Signalling System on the Kalaikunda–Kanimahuli railway section and inaugurated six redeveloped stations—Kamakhyaguri, Anara, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum and Siuri under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He also flagged off a new express train connecting Purulia with Anand Vihar Terminal, which will benefit passengers travelling across several states including Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.


Focusing on port development, the Prime Minister said that major ports such as Kolkata Port and the Haldia Dock Complex play a crucial role in eastern India’s trade network. He noted that mechanisation at Haldia Dock will speed up cargo handling and increase port capacity. The projects also include renovation of the Bascule Bridge and expansion of cargo handling facilities at Kidderpore Dock. According to the Prime Minister, these infrastructure developments will create new opportunities for farmers, traders, entrepreneurs and students while boosting tourism and strengthening the region’s
