The Delhi government has stepped up action against illegal construction and unsafe PG accommodations following the deadly building collapse in Satya Niketan. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to launch bulldozer action against unauthorised construction in several parts of the city and ordered senior MCD officials to remain present during the enforcement drives.

Gupta also instructed authorities to carry out intensive inspections of PG hostels across Delhi and take action against illegal construction. Officials have been directed to examine building records to establish when the unauthorised construction took place and under whose jurisdiction it was carried out.

The crackdown follows the September 6 collapse of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan that was being used as a boys’ PG accommodation. Seven people were killed in the incident, while the FIR reportedly alleged that four floors of the building had been illegally constructed. On September 7, the Delhi government ordered structural audits and safety inspections of PG accommodations, particularly in student hubs including Mukherjee Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Satya Niketan and Saket.

Authorities were asked to verify construction permissions, structural stability, fire-safety NOCs and compliance with building regulations. The MCD has also taken action against an adjoining dilapidated PG building in Satya Niketan after it was declared unsafe, with demolition beginning on Wednesday.

The latest measures underline the government’s focus on preventing similar incidents by identifying illegal construction and unsafe buildings. The scrutiny of building records and jurisdiction is also intended to determine how such violations were allowed to take place and establish accountability where necessary.
