The political confrontation between the DMK and Tamil Nadu’s ruling TVK intensified following the release of Udhayanidhi Stalin from police custody. The DMK accused the ruling party of arrogance, with party chief MK Stalin delivering a pointed message: “Arrogance leads to destruction; persistent arrogance only accelerates it”.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, was released nearly four hours after his arrest over an alleged “double-meaning” remark referring to popular actor Trisha. Rejecting the allegation that his speech was vulgar, he accused the TVK government of administrative failure and questioned its handling of the Cauvery water issue and its stand against the Mekedatu dam.

MK Stalin alleged that the government had failed to address these concerns and instead used Udhayanidhi’s arrest to shift attention away from the Cauvery issue. “The government has failed to respond to those charges and has instead resorted to arresting Udhayanidhi to divert attention from the Cauvery issue,” he said. He further stated, “The timing of the arrest -- a day before the state budget session - is an attempt to keep the Leader of the Opposition out of the assembly,”.

The DMK has also accused the TVK government of repeatedly resorting to arrests to silence political opponents and critics, including opposition leaders, students, farmers and protesters. With the arrest coming just ahead of the Assembly’s budget session, the episode has further sharpened the political battle between the two sides in Tamil Nadu.
