India and China continued efforts to stabilize their bilateral relationship as External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of balanced trade, sustained diplomatic engagement and peace along the border during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The meeting, held on the sidelines of ASEAN-related events in Manila, reflected both countries' focus on strengthening cooperation while addressing unresolved concerns through dialogue.

During the meeting, Jaishankar said, “After the meeting of our leaders in Kazan in October 2024, India-China relations have been moving towards gradual normalization. Their meeting in Tianjin last August further strengthened this direction.” He added, “India believes that a stable and cooperative relationship can be built on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity. Such a relationship can make a significant contribution to a multipolar Asia and a multipolar world.” He also described peace and stability in the border areas as a “prerequisite” for normal bilateral ties, saying both sides have been working towards this objective since October 2024 and that the existing mechanisms should continue to receive full support.

Jaishankar said, “This is why our leaders agreed that differences should not become disputes. It is the responsibility of diplomacy to handle them appropriately.” He welcomed recent developments aimed at restoring normal ties, including the resumption of direct flights, improvements in visa arrangements, the revival of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the reopening of border trade. However, he added, “There are still some important issues in the relationship that need attention. These include fair market access, trade balance and the stability of supply chains.” He also underlined the need to facilitate government-level and people-to-people exchanges and to reach agreement on meetings under various bilateral mechanisms.

Jaishankar also appreciated China's support for various initiatives during India's BRICS presidency. He said, “The current global situation is extremely complex, and at such a time it is important for both countries to exchange views on major global issues at the international level.” The discussions reflected the shared view that continued diplomatic engagement and cooperation on areas of mutual interest will remain essential as both nations work to further normalize their relationship while addressing outstanding challenges.
