VP Radhakrishnan Honors Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s Enduring Legacy

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan paid tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, highlighting his lasting contribution to India's education system, political landscape and vision of national unity. The tribute reflected Dr. Mookerjee’s enduring influence as a leader whose ideals continue to shape the country’s democratic and developmental journey.
Paying floral tributes at the Uprashtrapati Bhawan on Monday, the Vice President also shared his homage on X, writing, “Paid floral tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the Uprashtrapati Bhawan today on his 125th birth anniversary.” He further said, “A distinguished educationist, visionary statesman and nation-builder, Dr. Mookerjee left an enduring imprint on India’s educational, political and democratic journey. As one of the youngest Vice-Chancellors of the University of Calcutta, a member of the Constituent Assembly, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, Independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, he rendered exceptional service to the nation.”
Recalling Dr. Mookerjee’s commitment to national integration, the Vice President stated, “A steadfast champion of national unity and integrity, he made the supreme sacrifice in Jammu & Kashmir while striving for its full integration with Bharat. His life and ideals continue to inspire generations in the collective endeavour to build a strong, united, self-reliant and developed India.” Radhakrishnan further said that Dr. Mookerjee sacrificed his life for the unity of the nation and that such sacrifices would never go unheeded. He also remarked that Dr. Mookerjee had envisioned an India where every citizen would be equal under a single constitutional framework, adding that the abrogation of Article 370 was a tribute to his lifelong commitment to national integration.
Born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a prominent politician, barrister and academician who later served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s Cabinet. His contributions to public life and his vision for a united India continue to be remembered, with leaders across the country paying tribute to his legacy on his birth anniversary.
