Karnataka MLC Elections: Congress Wins 5 Seats Amid Cross-Voting Buzz

Bengaluru, June 18, 2026

The Karnataka Legislative Council (MLC) election delivered a politically significant result, with the ruling Congress winning 5 of the 7 seats while BJP secured 2. The outcome triggered political debate across the state, as discussions quickly centred on whether strategic planning and cross-voting influenced the final tally.

The contest was considered challenging for Congress before voting began. Although the party fielded five candidates, political calculations suggested that four seats were relatively secure based on its strength in the Assembly. The battle became more interesting after JD(S), led by H. D. Kumaraswamy, entered the contest for the remaining seat. Amid concerns over possible cross-voting, both Congress and JD(S) kept their MLAs at resorts ahead of polling and closely managed preparations.

Reports suggested that Congress benefited from vote transfers from the opposition camp, helping it secure the fifth seat. Political circles described the result as a strategic success linked to D. K. Shivakumar’s political management. However, Shivakumar publicly stated that his party had not facilitated cross-voting and said the election was conducted through a secret ballot process.

The result is being seen as more than just a Legislative Council election. It is being viewed as one of the first major political tests for Karnataka’s current government. For Congress, the victory is being interpreted as a sign of organisational strength, while for BJP and JD(S), it raises questions over future political strategy and internal coordination in the state.
