Bengal Govt Moves Fast on Border Fencing to Tackle Illegal Infiltration

Kolkata, May 20, 2026

West Bengal has intensified its focus on border security, with the state government announcing a major step aimed at speeding up fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border. The move reflects growing political and administrative attention on illegal infiltration and cross-border surveillance in sensitive districts of the state.

After the Cabinet meeting, Suvendu Adhikari said that land required for border fencing would be handed over to the Border Security Force within 45 days. The decision is expected to accelerate pending fencing work in several border areas where infrastructure development had reportedly been delayed for years.

The government linked the initiative to its broader campaign against illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. Adhikari also spoke about a “detect, delete and deport” policy, stating that the process of identifying illegal infiltrators had already started. Border districts including North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Malda and Cooch Behar are likely to witness increased coordination between the state administration and the BSF in the coming weeks.

The latest announcement has once again placed border management at the centre of Bengal’s political discourse. Officials believe that faster fencing and stronger monitoring could improve security in vulnerable regions while helping authorities keep a closer watch on illegal cross-border movement.
