BJP’s Historic Bengal Win Ends Mamata Banerjee’s Long Rule

Kolkata, May 4, 2026

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election marks a dramatic political shift, highlighting a decisive change in voter sentiment and power dynamics in the state. The dominant theme of this election is the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a region long governed by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), signaling a new political chapter.

The BJP secured a sweeping mandate, winning over 200 seats in the 294-member , while the TMC’s tally dropped significantly to around 80 seats. This outcome effectively brings an end to Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year tenure as Chief Minister and paves the way for the BJP to form its first-ever government in West Bengal.

In one of the most striking developments of the election, Mamata Banerjee lost her Bhabanipur seat to Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP. Following the results, she stated, “We will bounce back,” while also alleging that parts of the electoral process were “immoral” and “illegal.”

This result not only reshapes West Bengal’s political landscape but also strengthens BJP’s presence in eastern India. While the TMC faces a significant setback, its leadership has signaled resilience, indicating that the political contest in the state is far from over.
