India’s First Portable MRI: A Breakthrough at AIIMS Delhi

New Delhi, May 2, 2026

In a significant advancement for India’s healthcare system, AIIMS Delhi has introduced the country’s first portable MRI system. This development reflects a growing focus on making critical diagnostic services more accessible, especially for patients who cannot be easily moved within hospital settings.

The portable MRI system is expected to greatly benefit patients in intensive care units, trauma wards, and those with neurological conditions. It enables faster and safer imaging for cases such as strokes, head injuries, and other emergencies, where timely diagnosis plays a crucial role in treatment outcomes.

Unlike conventional MRI machines, this system can be brought directly to the patient’s bedside. Using magnetic fields and radio waves, it produces detailed internal images while reducing the risks and delays associated with transporting critically ill patients for scans.

This initiative not only enhances diagnostic capabilities at AIIMS but also sets the stage for wider adoption of portable imaging technologies across the country. It marks an important move toward faster, safer, and more efficient healthcare delivery, with the potential to improve outcomes for countless patients.
