India to Host First-Ever World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad

New Delhi, May 7, 2026

India is set to host the inaugural World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, marking a major step toward recognising Yogasana as a competitive international sport. The event reflects India’s broader push to promote Yoga beyond wellness and establish it within structured global sporting formats.

The championship, scheduled from June 4 to 8, 2026, will see participation from athletes representing over 40 countries. It is being organised under World Yogasana and hosted by Yogasana Bharat, with the aim of strengthening the sport’s global presence and encouraging wider international engagement.

Ahead of the championship, selection trials for the Indian national team were conducted on May 1 and 2, 2026, at the Sports Authority of India centre in Sonepat. Competitions were held across categories including traditional, artistic, rhythmic, and athletic Yogasana. Selected athletes will now undergo a national coaching camp in Ahmedabad.

The championship is being viewed as a significant step in projecting India’s yogic heritage on a global platform. Officials associated with Yogasana Bharat stated that the initiative aims to inspire youth participation worldwide and move Yogasana closer to broader international sporting recognition, including future multi-sport events.
