World Tuberculosis Day is being observed globally on March 24 to raise awareness about the serious health, social, and economic impact of tuberculosis (TB), and to strengthen efforts to eliminate the disease. The day marks the anniversary of Robert Koch’s discovery of the TB-causing bacterium in 1882, a breakthrough that laid the foundation for diagnosing and treating the illness.

In her message, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted that tuberculosis continues to remain a major public health challenge, affecting millions of people worldwide. She acknowledged the progress made under India’s TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, noting improvements in early diagnosis, free treatment, nutritional support, and overall patient care.

The President emphasised that these achievements reflect the country’s strong commitment under the National TB Elimination Programme. She called upon all stakeholders, including healthcare workers, policymakers, and citizens, to work together with renewed determination to completely eliminate tuberculosis.

The theme for this year, “Yes! We Can End TB,” underscores the importance of sustained global and local efforts, especially in tackling emerging challenges such as drug-resistant TB. The observance serves as a reminder that coordinated action and awareness are key to ending one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases.
