Sunny Deol’s much-awaited period drama Lahore 1947 has finally locked its theatrical release date. After months of delay and speculation, Aamir Khan Productions announced on February 9 that the film will release in cinemas on August 13, coinciding with the Independence Day week. The announcement has raised excitement among fans, as the film brings together several big names from Hindi cinema.
Lahore 1947 marks the first collaboration between Sunny Deol, director Rajkumar Santoshi and producer Aamir Khan. Sharing his thoughts, Aamir Khan said, “This was one of the favourite scripts of Dharamji, and I am so glad he could see the film.” The project also reunites Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, the iconic 1990s actor-director duo known for classics like Ghayal, Ghatak and Damini. Sunny believes audiences have been waiting a long time to see them work together again.
Talking about the long journey of the film, Sunny Deol said, "Lahore ek aisa subject hai jispe hum kaafi saalon se kaam kar rahe the, kayi actron ne kahaani suni hai. Kayi actor ke saath banne wala bhi tha, lekin bana nahi. Then again, Gadar 2 has made everything happen." His statement reflects how the project struggled to take shape for years before finally moving forward.
The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s famous play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni and is set during the Partition of India. The story follows a Muslim family that moves from Lucknow to Lahore and is given a haveli left behind by a Hindu family, only to discover that the former residents refuse to leave. The film also marks Preity Zinta’s return to the big screen, alongside Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol. Preity earlier described the project as the “toughest film” of her career. Sunny Deol was last seen in Border 2, which had a strong box office run, earning over ₹300 crore in India.
