Deadly Blast Rocks Islamabad Shia Religious Centre: 31 Killed, 169 Injured During Friday Prayers

Islamabad | 6 Feb 2026

A devastating explosion tore through the Khadijatul Kubra mosque-cum-imambargah in Islamabad on Friday, claiming at least 31 lives and leaving 169 others injured. The attack struck the minority Shia community during Friday prayers, sending shockwaves across the Pakistani capital.

According to police, the blast is suspected to be a suicide attack. Reports indicate that the attacker detonated explosives near the gate of the religious centre. “The explosion was powerful enough to be heard from a great distance,” said Islamabad Police Spokesperson Taqi Jawad, who added that authorities are still determining whether it was a suicide attack or a planted device.

Emergency teams and rescue officials rushed to the site immediately. The injured were transported to PIMS and Polyclinic hospitals for urgent treatment. Authorities are working to manage the situation and provide medical support to all affected victims.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, promising that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also condemned the incident and instructed authorities to ensure the best medical care for the injured. This comes just three months after another suicide blast outside a district court in Islamabad in November last year that killed 12 people.
