Governor Walks Out Mid-Speech During Bengal Budget Session, Sparks Political Storm

Kolkata | 5 Feb 2026

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday stopped his address midway and walked out of the state assembly during the budget session, creating a tense moment inside the House. The Governor read the written speech for about four-and-a-half minutes before placing the papers down and leaving, an act that immediately drew strong reactions from the opposition BJP.

Calling the move intentional, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said it was a clear message against the ruling Trinamool Congress government. “This was the governor’s symbolic refusal to read out a speech prepared by the Mamata Banerjee government. He stopped after reading a few lines and laid the paper,” Adhikari told the media, describing the walkout as a political signal.

As the Governor exited the House, BJP legislators welcomed the move with loud slogans. Before leaving, Bose briefly spoke with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In a notable moment, Banerjee placed a shawl around his neck and personally saw him off. However, she later chose not to comment on what was discussed between them.

Under Article 176 of the Constitution, the Governor is required to address the assembly at the start of the first session of every year and after elections. The sudden walkout during such a constitutional address has once again highlighted the growing friction between the Governor’s office and the state government, adding fresh fuel to Bengal’s already heated political atmosphere.
