Nepal Resets Governance: 1,594 Political Appointments Revoked
Kathmandu, May 3, 2026 In a sweeping move aimed at restructuring governance, Nepal has cancelled 1,594 political appointments, marking a significant shift in administrative control. The decision reflects an effort to streamline public institutions and reinforce accountability, signalling a new direction in the country’s political and governance framework.
The action follows an ordinance issued by President Ram Chandra Poudel, which annulled all political appointments made before March 26. As a result, individuals serving in various roles across public bodies were removed from their positions with immediate effect, irrespective of their remaining tenure. The impact of this decision spans multiple sectors, including universities, state-owned enterprises, councils, boards, and media organisations. While the move is intended to reset institutional structures, it has also created temporary gaps in leadership, raising questions about continuity and the speed of fresh appointments.
This large-scale administrative overhaul stands out as a decisive step toward reform. Going forward, the effectiveness of new appointments will be crucial in ensuring stability and maintaining the smooth functioning of key institutions across Nepal.
