This year’s theme, “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow,” focuses on the critical role of accurate weather observations in building a resilient future.


The day is marked annually on March 23 to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization in 1950. The occasion recognises the contributions of meteorological and hydrological services worldwide in protecting lives, supporting agriculture, and strengthening disaster preparedness.


Various activities and awareness programmes are being organised globally to underline the importance of weather forecasting and climate monitoring. Each year, the theme reflects key global concerns related to weather, climate change, and water resources.


In her message, Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the organisation, emphasised that every weather forecast is backed by millions of observations collected through a vast international network. She highlighted how these observations are carefully processed to provide accurate and timely information that benefits societies around the world.


Experts note that as climate challenges continue to grow, the role of scientific observation and international cooperation has become more important than ever in protecting communities and ensuring a sustainable future.
